9th Kazan International Muslim Film Festival: film critics and scholars of Islam select the films for the competition

9th Kazan International Muslim Film Festival will be held in the capital city of Tatarstan Republic in September, 2013.

We still continue to accept applications to participate in the 9th Kazan International Muslim Film Festival. Currently, 200 applications are sent to organizing committee and the selection board started watching these films.

The selection board members are professional film critics. Well-known Russian film critic Sergei Lavrentiev, who has great experience of working in the international film festivals, will lead the selection of the films. All the films are tested for the compliance with the ideological values of the festival. Professional scholars of Islam, ulemas, will criticise the films. They are led by Rustam Batrov – the first deputy of Mufti of Tatarstan Republic, as well as the Chairman of Ulemas council of the Spiritual Directorate of Muslims of Tatarstan Republic.

“We really need the help of honourable ulemas while selecting the films” – says the principle of “Tatarkino” Vladimir Batrakov. “We receive a lot of films corresponding to the concept of the festival. But among those films there are some which cannot be associated with the “Muslim” film, as they do not deal with the issues of religion, Islam, but tells about values of humanity and consequently call for philanthropy, and thus for tolerance. These films will make non-competitive program of the festival. It’s already known fact that the 9th Kazan International Muslim Film Festival will embrace the programmes of European, Indian cinematography, also there will be the program of films produced by the filmmakers from the Former Soviet Union Republics”.

We are still working on forming the international board of jury, who will assess the films, selected for the competitive program of the festival.

Karen Shakhnazarov – Soviet and Russian filmmaker, producer, scriptwriter, the head of “Mosfilm” cinema studio will lead the jury. There are also negotiations with the well known filmmakers from Europe, Turkey, Iran and India.
